MARYSVILLE — Both Sultan and Lakewood were both on the fringe of the Cascade Conference playoff race entering a matchup at Lakewood High School on Monday, but two Bryan Ordonez goals gave Sultan the 2-1 victory and hope for a playoff berth. Both Sultan, 5th place in league entering, and Lakewood, in 6th place, needed a win to stay in contention for the 4th spot in league and the final playoff berth.
Bryan Ordonez, a senior right midfielder, scored an unassisted goal in the 20th minute that deflected off of Lakewood goalie Sam Roe and into the net. Lakewood’s Jordan Vandelac answered with a goal in the 41st minute, sneaking a ball on the ground past Sultan’s goalkeeper Danny Arroyo.
With 10 minutes remaining in the game, Lakewood picked up its fifth yellow card, and playing a man down, gave up a 71st-minute Ordonez goal, assisted from a midfield pass by Simon Chavez to Ordonez, who was at the 25 yard line. Ordonez beat a defender and kicked the ball past a charging Roe and into the goal.
“(He has) phenomenal ball control, he brought the ball from the cross right down to his feet,” said Sultan coach TJ Nicholas about Ordonez’s second goal, his seventh of the year.
Sultan has two games remaining in its league schedule, and while at a minimum they are hoping to take the fourth spot from South Whidbey, “It’s not impossible for us to take the third seed,” said Nicholas.
The win puts Sultan at 6-6 in league, and 6-6 overall. Lakewood falls to 4-8, 5-9.
