Prep boys swimming: Kamiak closes in on title

MILL CREEK — When you’re on top, the only place to go is down.

Unless you are the Kamiak boys swimming team which continued it’s perfect season with a 120-50 Wesco South victory over Jackson at Mill Creek Pool.

“We had a lot of improvement in general,” Kamiak head coach Chris Erickson said.

The Knights (6-0 in league, 8-0 overall) moved to within one win of clinching the division dual-meet championship and had three swimmers post state qualifying times. For two of those swimmers it was their first of the season.

Senior Gus Brunner, who finished eighth at state last year in the 100-yard breaststroke, qualified with a time of 1 minute, 3.45 seconds.

“We knew he would get it,” Erickson said. “He just hadn’t gotten it yet … That’s exactly what we had hoped for today. It’s nice to get it done just before districts.”

Daniel Schmidt, a 50 freestyle specialist, qualified in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.57.

Tyler Carriker was the other state qualifier for Kamiak, with a qualifying time of 22.73 in the 50 freestyle.

Nick Win led Jackson (4-3, 7-5) with a state qualifying time of 2:03.44 in the 200 individual medley. Win also won the 100 backstroke (57.03).

Erickson acknowledges that going undefeated is “a minor goal, but it’s certainly one we’d like to accomplish.”

“We’re working hard towards the February championship meets,” Erickson continued. “The dual meets are just little midterms along the way. Or pop quizzes … We’re studying for the big final.”
