ARLINGTON — A trick play paid off big for Arlington in its Wesco 3A North opener on Friday night, putting it in front in a game that saw the Eagles and Chargers exchange scores.
Noah Andal took a handoff on a fly sweep, but pulled up and threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Donavan Sellgren to give the Eagles the lead on the first play from scrimmage.
“Getchell’s corners are really aggressive and good run supporters, so we tried to take advantage of that,” Arlington coach Greg Dailer said. “Noah is our backup quarterback, and it wound up being a difference in the game.”
Arlington also had a 67-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Kalahar to Kyle Bayer later in the game that helped the Eagles keep pace with Marysville Getchell.
Collin Montez had 206 yards rushing and a touchdown on 35 carries for Marysville Getchell, but Dailer said the Arlington defense stiffened in the fourth quarter after the Eagles retook the lead on a 3-yard scoring run by Tyler Smith.
“Our front seven really stepped up in the second half,” Dailer said. “Montez is a big, tough kid, but he took a lot of shots tonight and he was worn out in the fourth quarter.”
Starting league play with a win was Arlington’s goal all week.
“It was crucial,” Dailer said. “You don’t want to start out behind the eight ball, and we would have had a tough time trying to crawl out of the cellar.”
