DARRINGTON — Former University of Washington head football coach Jim Lambright spoke with the Darrington Loggers football team prior to its tilt with Chief Leschi, Friday.
Whatever was said seemed to have done the trick for Darrington which routed Chief Leschi 51-12 for its first win of the season.
“Anytime you have a figure like that he’s very inspirational,” Darrington head coach Doug Lenker said. “He touched on a lot of things that maybe we needed to hear such as coming to together as a team … He was a pleasure to have out there.”
Perhaps inspired by Coach Lambright’s words, several of the Loggers’ key offensive weapons came through with solid games.
Darrington quarterback Trent Green finished 12 of 20 passing for 169 yards and a touchdown. Eric Meece carried 11 times for 127 yards and three touchdowns and senior receiver Justin Smith had 69 yards and a touchdown catch.
“Leschi really had no answer for Smith,” Lenker said. “He’s having a big year for us.”
After a shaky first quarter according to Lenker, the Loggers came alive and started to play physical football on both sides of the ball.
“(After the first quarter) our offense came together. We ran the ball real well and threw too,” Lenker said. “Our line blocked well and our defense was dominant … (they) controlled the line of scrimmage. We’re really happy with them.”
And, probably, fairly content with Coach Lambright’s pre-game pep talk.
