Prep football: Everett 49, Bainbridge 20

EVERETT — Murdock Rutledge threw four touchdown passes to as many different receivers, and the Seagulls chewed up the field on the ground on its way to a non-conference victory over Bainbridge Saturday at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Everett improved to 3-0 on the season after finishing 1-9 in each of the past three campaigns.

Ryan Saltz, Louis Davis, Aki Howell and Nick Castro all caught scoring passes from Rutledge in the game, but Seagulls coach Doug Trainor said his team went into Saturday’s contest focused on running the football.

“We ran the football really effectively today, and we went into the game trying to emphasize the run game,” Trainor said. “We had a lot of big plays in the run game and finished off drives really well in the passing game. We want to establish the run game, because we know that’s what’s going to get us to the next level.”

Even at 3-0, with its Wesco 3A North opener looming next week against Oak Harbor, Trainor said his team is not satisfied.

“Our guys didn’t think we played well. Everyone’s waiting to get to the film on Monday and we know we have to clean up a lot of stuff in order to be a competitive football team next week.”

Trainor said his team racked up over 100 yards in penalties and committed five 15-yard infractions against Bainbridge.

“Give credit to Bainbridge. They really played their hearts out and played a tough, physical game that sapped a lot of our energy,” Trainor said.
