Prep football: Lake Stevens 31, Edmonds-Woodway 27

EDMONDS — Edmonds-Woodway quarterback Davis Giles threw an incomplete pass and the Warriors turned the ball over on downs late in the game to give the Vikings a 31-27 victory and the Wesco 4A No. 3 seed.

Desmond Young of Edmonds-Woodway ran for 254 yards on 28 carries to go along with his three touchdowns and Lake Stevens back Austin Otis ran for 163 yards on 26 carries.

Every time Lake Stevens seemed to carry any momentum in the game, the Warriors — despite their offensive struggles, including not completing a pass until the second half — would strike right back as these two teams, although only playing for seeding, turned this game into a war.

Both teams had a number of scores called back due to penalties, Lake Stevens had a chance to put the game away when Edmonds-Woodway failed to convert on a fourth-and-26, but after an incomplete pass the Vikings were called on a roughing the passer penalty that gave the Warriors another shot at the end zone. Young would run it in two plays later to pull the Edmonds-Woodway with in seven to make it 28-21. After an interception by Lake Stevens quarterback Gavin O’Neil two plays later, Young would run it in for yet another score to pull the Warriors within one with 7:16 left in the game.

Connor Davis however, would miss the extra point that would’ve tied the game, giving the Vikings enough time to drive for one last field goal to seal the victory.

O’Neil would complete 16 of 32 passes for 310 yards on the night, and Vikings wide receiver Connor Coleman had 8 receptions for a school record 210 yards.

Lake Stevens will play a home playoff game next week against either Kentlake and Edmonds-Woodway, despite the loss will play as the Wesco No. 4 seed against Bellarmine Prep.
