KENT — The Edmonds-Woodway Warriors showed resiliency Friday night against Kentwood in a 4A quad-district playoff game, but in the end were left heartbroken in defeat. After trailing 22-7 in the third quarter, the Warriors mounted a comeback to tie, only to lose 35-28 after two plays in overtime.
“It happened so fast. It was kind of a shock,” Edmonds-Woodway coach John Gradwohl said.
After E-W’s Az Primacio returned a kickoff 94 yards to take the game to overtime, Kentwood scored on a 40-yard Darrius Coleman run on the first play of overtime. Kentwood had been penalized for a dead ball personal foul prior to the overtime and began its possession on the 40.
On its possession, Edmonds-Woodway pitched the ball to Tony Heard as he swept to the left. The play called for Heard to pass but the throw to Din Kuses was off target enough for the Kentwood cornerback to intercept the ball and end Edmonds-Woodway’s season.
After making halftime adjustments, the Warriors scored on a 12-yard Tony Heard touchdown run then later in the third quarter with a 49-yard touchdown catch by Kuses from Andy Willcock.
Luke Angevine scored his second touchdown for Kentwood in the fourth quarter but Primacio took the game to overtime with his kickoff return.
Heard ended up with 144 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. Willcock was 15-of-26 passing for 171 yards, his favorite target was Kuses who had 95 yards on seven catches with two touchdowns.
