EVERETT — Archbishop Murphy sophomore post Beth Carlson stepped up and converted high-percentage shots to help lead the Wildcats to a 44-35 Cascade Conference win over King’s on Friday night at Archbishop Murphy High School.
Murphy broke a tie with King’s for first place in the conference.
The 6-foot-2 Carlson scored 10 of her game-high 14 points in the third quarter as the Wildcats (5-0 league, 8-2 overall) built a 38-24 lead.
“King’s got their post players into some foul trouble, they had to make an adjustment and we were able to get Beth the ball in the right spots,” said Archbishop Murphy head coach John Barhanovich.
King’s (4-1, 7-4) cut the lead to seven in the fourth quarter, but missed three late shots that would’ve closed the gap. The Wildcats converted six free throws, their only points in the final quarter, to hold off the Knights.
King’s shot just 19 percent from the field in the loss.
“That was probably the key to the whole thing,” Barhanovich said. “We knew we had to slow down Karlie Storkson and Joclyn Kirton.”
Carlson finished with 14 rebounds for the Wildcats.
