EDMONDS — The Edmonds-Woodway girls basketball team stayed alive again on Wednesday night, winning a 4A District 1 loser-out game over Jackson 50-39.
E-W was the Wesco South’s top seed coming into the tournament, but it was upset by Marysville-Pilchuck in the opening round, forcing the Warriors to win all of their remaining tournament games to advance to the state regional.
The Warriors win on Wednesday sets up a rematch with Marysville-Pilchuck at 6 p.m. Saturday at Marysville-Pilchuck. The winner of that game advances to play the No. 3 team from Kingco for a regional berth.
“We are taking a long scenic road to state,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Duane Hodges said. “It’s not that nobody is going to do it, somebody is going to have to do it.”
They closed out Jackson with some timely free-throw shooting. As a team, the Warriors shot 9-for-14 from the line in the fourth quarter. E-W counted on Angela Woods the entire game from the charity stripe. She shot 11-for-14 and scored 21 points overall.
The Warriors also held Jackson’s standout freshman, Kelli Kingma, without a field goal. Hodges credited guards Amia Nash and Madeline Kasper with shutting down Kingma.
Kristin Stoffel led Jackson with 12 points.
