Prep girls basketball roundup

EDMONDS — The Edmonds-Woodway girls basketball team is still tied with Jackson in the running for the Wesco South’s No. 1 4A seed in the District 1 tournament, for now.

The Warriors defeated Mountlake Terrace 64-42 at Edmonds-Woodway High School to remain tied atop the South standings with Jackson and Class 3A Meadowdale. If the season ends in a tie, Jackson has the advantage and would take the No. 1 seed. Jackson and E-W split the season series, but the Timberwolves swept Meadowdale, the next team in the standings and the Warriors split that series too.

All this means the Warriors will have to come out take care of business against Lynnwood on Thursday and hope Mountlake Terrace can upset the Timberwolves.

“Jackson is an outstanding team,” E-W head coach Wayne Edwards said.

The Warriors (14-3 in league, 15-4 overall) were led by a couple of sophomores. Sydney Donaldson had 20 points (eight in the second quarter), seven rebounds and two blocks. Angela Woods contributed 12 points, five rebounds and five steals.

“Donaldson had a great game,” Edwards says. “Woods had her usual good game … they’re both very good players.”

On Senior Night, E-W got solid performances from their two seniors too. Abby Butler had 15 points — 11 in the fourth quarter — and Jennifer Singh added eight poings and three steals.

Majorie Heard carried the load for Glacier Peak (10-7, 11-8), scoring exactly half of the Grizzlies 42 points.

“Heard played one heck of a game,” Edwards said. “She’s just a super, outstanding player.”

After having several starters miss multiple games with colds and injuries, Edwards says his team is finally back to full strength and ready to take on the postseason.

“We were healthy tonight, and its the first time we’ve been healthy since prior to the Meadowdale game (on Janurary 28th),” Edwards said. “We’re healthy now so we’ll go from here and try to win the next game.”
