Prep girls basketball: Shorecrest 59, Washougal 42

YAKIMA — The Shorecrest girls are living proof that you can’t always judge a basketball team by its record.

The Scots came into their Class 2A state quarterfinal against Washougal on Thursday with a modest 15-10 mark, the worst among the eight teams remaining in the tournament.

But that didn’t matter Thursday morning as the Scots built a nine-point halftime lead and cruised to a 59-42 victory over the Panthers. Shorecrest moves on to face top-ranked East Valley of Spokane (21-3) in the semifinals on Friday. East Valley defeated Anacortes 57-50 on Thursday.

The Scots’ modest record is the result of having played their regular season in the Wesco 3A/2A South, arguably the toughest 3A league in the state. They are 6-1 in games against 2A opponents this season, their only setback being a 52-45 loss to No. 3 Lynden in the district tournament.

Shorecrest opened Thursday’s quarterfinal with a 7-0 run. After Washougal tied the game 7-7, the Scots closed the half on an 18-9 run and led by at least nine points the rest of the way.

Julia Strand, a sophomore forward, led three Shorecrest players in double figures with 18 points. Senior post Uju Chibuoghu scored 15 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, and junior guard Jazlyn Owens added 11 points.

Alyssa Blankenship led Washougal (19-7) with 18 points.
