Prep girls roundup: 4th-quarter free throws help Jackson triumph

LYNNWOOD — No Kristi Kingma, no Eryn Jones, no big deal.

Continuing in a tradition of good girls basketball and close games decided in the final quarter, the Jackson Timberwolves defeated the Meadowdale Mavericks 51-46 in a Wesco South game at Meadowdale High School Friday night.

The two teams have been a fixture atop the Wesco South standings with both teams finishing 1-2 in the division the last four years.

Jackson won the South title in 2008 and finished second to Meadowdale in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

“Both teams competed very well. It continues a tradition of good games between Meadowdale and Jackson,” first-year Meadowdale head coach Troy Parker said.

Chanel Sam led Jackson with 17 points but it was her clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch that proved the difference.

“Jackson did a great job of hitting cluth free throws,” Parker said.

Sam finished 5-for-5 from the line in the fourth and Jackson finished 7-for-7 as a team in the quarter.

Sam scored 13 of her 17 in the second half and Erin .

Hanna Fjortoft helped keep Meadowdale in the game scoring 15 of her 19 in the second half.

The two teams combined to score just seven points in the first quarter before Jackson erupted for 19 in the second.

“Both teams pride themselves on good defense. Jackson did a great job,” Parker said.

Jackson wouldn’t trail the rest of the game.
