Here are four local prep events to keep an eye on this week:
1. Girls basketball: Gig Harbor vs. Snohomish, 3 p.m. Wednesday. This Cloud 9 Sports Christmas Classic contest in Lynden will feature two teams that have their sights set on deep 3A state tournament runs. The Panthers (7-0), traditional defensive stalwarts, are limiting their opponents to 35.3 points per game. The Tides are ranked No. 1 in the state 3A Ratings Percentage Index.
2. Boys basketball: Edmonds-Woodway vs. Sunnyside, 3 p.m. Friday. The Warriors (5-3) are averaging 67.8 points per game, third in Wesco 3A. They’ll take on a Grizzlies squad that is playing well — Sunnyside is 7-1, with its only loss coming to Columbia Basin Big Nine rival Davis, ranked third in the 4A RPI.
3. Boys basketball: Jackson at Bothell, 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Timberwolves won their first four games of the season, then lost their next two. They’ve been led by Christian Liddell, who’s averaging 17.5 points per game. They’ll be challenged in this Bothell Tournament game by the host Cougars, who are ranked fifth in the 4A RPI.
4. Girls wrestling: Wooley Woman’s Tournament, 9 a.m. Saturday. This tourney, hosted by Sedro-Woolley High School, is one of the bigger girls wrestling tournaments in the area. Arlington, Darrington, Everett, Granite Falls, Glacier Peak, Kamiak, Oak Harbor and Stanwood are scheduled to participate.
