Local prep events to keep an eye on this week:
Softball: Jackson at Lake Stevens, 4 p.m. Tuesday. Three weeks ago, Jackson’s Iyanla Pennington and Lake Stevens’ Sara Johnson squared off in an epic pitchers’ duel between two NCAA Division 1-bound hurlers. Pennington and the unbeaten Timberwolves prevailed in that nine-inning thriller 2-1, handing Lake Stevens its only loss of the season. Tuesday’s rematch has massive Wesco 4A title implications and figures to be another must-see affair.
Baseball: 4A and 3A Northwest District tournaments, Thursday and Saturday. The Class 4A district tournament begins Saturday afternoon with a pair of loser-out games involving seeds 3-6. The 3A district tournament opens with play-in games Thursday, followed by four quarterfinal games Saturday afternoon.
Soccer: 3A District 1 tournament, Thursday and Saturday. The district tournament begins with two play-in matches Thursday, followed by four quarterfinal matches Saturday. Marysville Pilchuck can clinch the Wesco 3A title and district tournament’s top seed by beating Arlington in Tuesday night’s regular-season finale.
Girls tennis: Lake Stevens at Glacier Peak, 3:30 p.m. Friday. The top two Wesco 4A teams meet in a showdown with conference-title implications. Glacier Peak was 10-0 in conference play going into Monday’s matches and Lake Stevens was 9-1, with its lone loss coming in a 5-2 defeat to the Grizzlies. Going into Monday’s play, Glacier Peak had won 44 straight conference matches dating back to April 2015.
