Here are five non-football events to keep an eye on this week as the fall sports season gets into full swing:
Girls swimming: Snohomish, Lake Stevens and Cascade, 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Snohomish Aquatic Center. This season-opening tri-meet features a battle between Lake Stevens and Snohomish — two of the area’s top teams in recent years. Lake Stevens has won 44 of its past 45 dual meets, including 39 in a row against Wesco North competition.
Girls soccer: Snohomish at Archbishop Murphy, 6 p.m. Tuesday. Archbishop Murphy made its Wesco 3A debut last Thursday, beating a Stanwood team that finished second in the conference last season. Next up for the Wildcats is a showdown against defending Wesco 3A champion Snohomish.
Volleyball: Archbishop Murphy at Snohomish, 7 p.m. Tuesday. Snohomish, which placed eighth in the 3A state tournament last year, hosts league newcomer Archbishop Murphy in a Wesco 3A matchup. The Wildcats took defending league champion Stanwood to four sets last Friday, joining Snohomish as just the second Wesco 3A team since November 2016 to avoid getting swept by the Spartans.
Girls soccer: Glacier Peak at Lake Stevens, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Two of last year’s top three finishers in Wesco 4A square off in an early-season conference clash. Lake Stevens beat Glacier Peak in both of the teams’ meetings last season en route to a second-place league finish.
Cross country: South Whidbey Invitational, 10 a.m. Saturday at South Whidbey H.S. Thirty-nine schools are slated to compete in the 40th annual South Whidbey Invitational. This meet takes place at the same site as the Northwest District championships, which are scheduled for Oct. 27.
