Prep Notebook: Glacier Peak loses Heard to broken foot

University of Washington basketball recruit Marjorie Heard will be out for at least a month — and possibly the rest of her final high school season — because of a broken foot.

Heard, a star 6-foot-1 senior forward, plays for the Glacier Peak High School girls basketball team. She suffered a foot injury this past Friday in the Grizzlies’ game at Kamiak.

Midway through the third quarter Heard went up for a rebound and got hurt when she came down.

“I just landed on it wrong and completely broke my (left) foot,” Heard said Thursday.

Heard, who signed with the UW women’s basketball team in November, broke her fifth metatarsal bone and must wear a protective boot for four weeks.

Heard is scheduled to have an X-ray on Monday and find out if she will need surgery. If surgery is required Heard would be out for the season. Her best-case scenario is a return near the end of the upcoming Class 3A District 1 tournament.

“That’s what we’re praying for,” she said.

An unusually powerful, aggressive player, Heard is averaging about 14.5 points and 15 rebounds per game this season.

“When you have a person like (Heard) on your team, you tend to build your entire program around that,” Glacier Peak coach Brian Hill said. “We’ve had to make a lot of changes and adjustments.”

After Heard’s injury, Glacier Peak earned a 49-37 victory over Kamiak. Then the Grizzlies won 43-42 at Shorewood on Wednesday, improving Glacier Peak’s Western Conference South Division record to 9-6 (10-7 overall).

Among 3A teams in the division, Glacier Peak is No. 3 behind Shorecrest and Meadowdale (both 10-5). All four South 3A teams will advance to districts.

Junior Olivia VanDlac (5-foot-9) and freshman Allie Weathersby (5-10), previously substitutes, have been trying to fill the void in Glacier Peak’s lineup. Without Heard dominating inside, the Grizzlies must have more consistent outside shooting and overcome a psychological hump, coach Hill said.

Heard said she has been encouraging her teammates, who were understandably unsure about their prospects when Heard got hurt. She believes they can succeed without her.

“They can do it,” Heard said.

Jackson’s Todd set to return

After missing three full games following a concussion, guard Ryan Todd could be back tonight for the state-ranked Jackson High boys basketball team. Todd, a Seattle Pacific University recruit, practiced several times this week. “We’re cautiously optimistic that he will be able to play (against Meadowdale in Mill Creek),” Jackson coach Steve Johnson said Thursday afternoon. Todd is averaging about 15.5 points, four rebounds, 3.5 assists and one steal for Jackson (14-1 in division, 16-1 overall), which is in first place in the Wesco South. Meadowdale (11-4 South) is the only team that has beaten Jackson this season.

Basketball ‘Cat Fight’ tonight

The Lakewood-Granite Falls basketball doubleheader tonight at Granite Falls High is billed as the first annual Cat Fight. Spurred by the schools’ leadership class members, the rivals are doing competitive fundraising and each school will hold a pep assembly before the basketball games, according to Lakewood girls basketball coach Chris Walster. Lakewood students will decorate the hallways and gym at Granite Falls. The girls game tips off at 5:15 p.m.; the boys are set to start at 7 p.m.

King’s raises money, awareness

The King’s of Shoreline girls basketball team raised $2,313 for cancer research on Friday at its game against Coupeville. Players used a pink basketball and wore pink uniforms and socks for Pink Night. King’s donated the money to Athena Partners, a not-for-profit group that supports women’s cancer research; Athena will donate the funds to the American Cancer Society, King’s coach Dan Taylor said.
