Shannon Murray, who guided Glacier Peak to the 2010 3A boys soccer state championship in his first year at the school, has been selected to coach the girls program at Archbishop Murphy High School.
Murray can hold both posts because high school girls soccer is a fall sport while boys play in the spring.
Murray, who is a full-time soccer coach, also coaches two club teams and coached the Kamiak boys from 1997-2000.
Murray played high school soccer at Marysville Pilchuck and was a three-year starter at the University of Washington before going on to a five-year professional career in the American Professional Soccer League.
He replaces Eddie Fernandez, who led the Murphy girls to the 2A state semifinals last fall.
“Eddie Fernandez is one of my best friends in the world,” Murray said of his former teammate on the North County United club team.
Area soccer stars Chris and Sean Henderson were also on the team, which was coached by their dad, Dick, a former coach at Cascade and Murphy.
“We’re all connected,” Murray said. “It makes coaching in the area really fun.”
It will be Murray’s first experience coaching high school girls although he has coached girls club teams ranging from under-10 years old to U-18.
“I coach in the club world so I’m familiar with the players,” Murray said.
“The culture (at Murphy) is similar to Glacier Peak. They believe in hard work, so it’ll be a nice challenge.”
Murray’s Glacier Peak boys team finished third in the 3A state playoffs in May.
Brown commits to Arizona
Jackson High School pitcher-outfielder Sam Brown has made a verbal commitment to play baseball at the University of Arizona, Jackson baseball coach Kirk Nicholson said this week.
Brown, who is about to enter his senior year, can’t officially sign with the Wildcats until November.
Arizona made a scholarship offer to Brown last week, Nicholson said. This past spring Brown, a three-sport athlete, made The Herald’s All-Area first team as an outfielder and was an All-Wesco South 4A first-team selection as a pitcher and outfielder.
