John Froland and Riley Carr never went head-to-head in a high school football game. But maybe one day they will clash on a high-profile collegiate stage.
Froland (Glacier Peak High School) and Carr (Jackson High School) are local football stars who will both sign an NCAA National Letter of Intent with Division-I Football Bowl Subdivision programs on Wednesday. Froland, a quick lineman, will sign with Northwestern University of the Big Ten Conference; Carr, a versatile running back/linebacker, will sign with the Air Force Academy of the Mountain West Conference.
Froland (6-foot-5, 245 pounds) helped lead second-year Glacier Peak of the Wesco 3A Conference to two consecutive playoff appearances, including a run to the 3A state quarterfinals in November. He was The Herald’s All-Area Defensive Player of the Year.
Despite dealing with injuries in 2009, Carr (6-0, 225 pounds) was a huge reason why Jackson of Mill Creek won back-to-back Wesco South 4A titles and earned state-playoff trips the past two seasons.
At separate ceremonies on Wednesday, Froland and Carr will formally accept football scholarships by signing an NCAA National Letter of Intent. The signing period for several sports (including football, soccer, track and field and cross country) begins this week.
Dozens of other local student-athletes are also expected to sign, including Archbishop Murphy’s Lindsey Bos and Marysville-Pilchuck’s John Crenshaw. They will sign with the University of Washington women’s and men’s soccer programs, respectively. Bos was The Herald’s 2009 All-Area Girls Soccer Player of the Year; Crenshaw was the All-Area Boys Soccer Player of the Year this past spring.
