ARLINGTON — Vasily Bogdanoff and the Lake Stevens soccer team picked a good time to break out of a slump.
Bogdanoff, who has been mired in a season-long scoring drought according to Lake Stevens head coach Scott Flanders, scored a hat trick to lead the Vikings to a 5-1 Wesco North Division win over Arlington Saturday afternoon at Arlington High School.
The win gives Lake Stevens (7-5 league, 7-5 overall) sole possession of fourth place in the Wesco North standings with four games remaining on the schedule. The top four 4A teams reach the District 1 playoffs.
“We’re getting down to crunch time,” Flanders said. “This (win) breaks a four-game skid for us, we’ve felt like we’ve played well, but just couldn’t put it all together.
“It was nice to break out,” Flanders said.
Bogdanoff scored all three of his goals in the first half (27, 29 and 38th minutes). Senior Scotty DeOliveira assisted on two goals and Zach Wagner on one of Bogdanoff’s tallies.
Wagner, a senior captain, added two more assists, one on John Gleason’s goal in the second half and another on Jake Orwiler’s 61st minute goal. The three assists give Wagner a total of 13 for the season.
“He’s done a great job so far this season,” Flanders said.
The Vikings, three points (one win) behind Monroe for third place, faces the bottom three teams in the league and also has a showdown with league-leader Marysville-Pilchuck in two weeks.
“We’re hoping to catch Monroe with these two weeks left to go,” Flanders said. “…We’re looking forward to these last couple of weeks of the season.”
