MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Tulalip Heritage secured its second trip to the 1B state tournament in three seasons with a 61-45 Tri-district semifinal win over Clallam Bay Tuesday at Mountlake Terrace High School.

The Hawks clamped down defensively in the third quarter, according to team manager Ron Iukes, and held Clallam Bay to seven points, expanding a three-point halftime lead to 16.

Tulalip plays North Sound Christian for the Tri-district championship at 5 p.m. Saturday at Mountlake Terrace H.S.

Lesjar McKinney led the Hawks with 19 points. Shawn Comenote contributed 17.

Tulalip finished second at state two seasons ago in its first tournament appearance.

North Sound Christian 62, Lummi 56: At Mountlake Terrace, North Sound Christian, which had lost three times to Lummi during the regular season, earned its first-ever state tournament berth with the Tri-district semifinal win. North Sound, which was 7-for-9 from 3-point range, jumped out to a 23-9 lead after one quarter. Daron Otis led all scorers with 24 points. Jeremy Waller had 15 points, eight assists and five steals. Tanner Mahler scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. North Sound is the first boys team first-year coach Bill Kelley, who has previously been to state with the Bellevue and Archbishop Murphy girls, has taken to state. “This is awesome,” he said.

Mariner 53, Marysville-Pilchuck 52: At Everett, with Mariner behind by one point, Damascus Purnell made a lay-up with six seconds to go to seal the 4A District 1 playoff game for the Marauders. Senior Michael Minor finished with 16 points and four steals for the Marauders, who face Lake Stevens on Friday at Jackson H.S. in a winner-to-state semifinal. Nick Soriano also had 16 points to lead M-P, which will play Snohomish on Thursday in a loser-out game.

The Spartans will move on to face Wesco South No. 1 Mountlake Terrace Friday in a winner-to-state semifinal. Jackson plays Arlington in a loser-out game Thursday.
