LANGLEY -Coupeville fought off a fourth-quarter rally by South Whidbey to win 46-42 Saturday in a non-league boys basketball game.

Allan Black led Coupeville with 16 points, 14 of which came in the first half and J.J. Marti added 14 as Coupeville improved to 3-2 overall. South Whidbey dropped to 2-2.

“Conditioning was a big factor in this game. It certainty showed in our (poor) shooting,” South Whidbey coach Andy Davis said. “It take a lot out of you when you play two games in two nights.”

Despite trailing by as many as 17 points in the first half, South Whidbey was able to pull within two points with less than a minute and a half to play. Kyle McGillen led the charge for South Whidbey, scoring 13 of his 15 points in the second half.

“We were within two points, but then we had to start fouling,” Davis said. “Another part of it was that we were 1-for-17 (shooting 3-point shots). And they were all good looks, too. They (Coupeville) just broke us down and we couldn’t catch them.”

Nick Lassar grabbed 11 rebounds and scored six points for South Whidbey.
