PREP ROUNDUP: Archbishop Murphy beats Sultan 2-0 in boys soccer

Everett — Coming into Saturday’s game the Archbishop Murphy boys soccer team was riding a three-game win streak and looking to solidify its place near the top of the Cascade Conference. The Wildcats scored two goals inside the first 30 minutes of play and defeated Sultan 2-0 on Archbishop Murphy’s home field.

“We were able to get a lot of pressure on them early,” Archbishop Murphy coach Jon Echols said.

Archbishop Murphy has now won seven of its past eight games and can finish no worse than third in the league.

“We felt that playing at home with the streak we’re on we really wanted to win the game,” Echols said.

Elijah Wright scored both of Murphy’s goals, the first coming off an assist from James Huard in the seventh minute and the second coming from a Kyle Ryan pass in the 28th minute.

The Wildcats kept the pressure on in the second half but were unable to add any more goals to their total.

“(Playing with a lead is) an area we need to improve on,” Echols said.

Wildcat goalie Jeff Renslo worked hard to earn the shutout. He stopped two Sultan penalty kicks, once in the first half and once in the second.
