PREP ROUNDUP: Baseball, fastpitch, tennis, track and field

SHORELINE — Edmonds-Woodway’s baseball team was treated like royalty, and it was all because of the rain.

On Tuesday the Warriors trailed Shorecrest and the Scots’ No. 1 pitcher James Robbins 2-0 when the game was called in the third inning because of rain at Edmonds-Woodway High School.

On Wednesday the game was moved to Shorecrest’s turf field and re-started with Edmonds-Woodway as the home team.

No longer trailing 2-0 and not facing Robbins, the Warriors hit three home runs en route to a 6-3 victory in the first Wesco South game of the season for both teams.

The victory improved Edmonds-Woodway’s overall record to 3-0. Shorecrest fell to 2-1.

“You got that right,” E-W head coach Dan Somoza said when asked if he was happy to get the game in following Tuesday’s rainout. “You have all these plans and the rain changes everything around. I’m jealous of the field that Shorecrest has since its turf.”

Somaza said the Warriors took advantage of playing in Shorecrest’s small park, with Austin Jones, Joe Lopresti and Andy Willcock hitting home runs.

Jones hit a two-run homer in the first, Lopresti broke a 2-2 tie with a leadoff home run in the third and Wilcox hit a two-run homer in the fifth.

“We needed all those runs, because Shorecrest has the ability to put runs on the scoreboard without a problem,” Somaza said, referring to a solo home run hit by Robbins in the third inning.

E-W’s Brandon Lowe (2-0) came out of the bullpen in the fifth inning, striking out two, to escape a bases loaded, one-out jam.

“He is a lefty who throws strikes and that is what you need coming out of the bullpen.” Somoza said.
