PREP ROUNDUP: Baseball/Golf/Track

MARYSVILLE — Tyler Holm’s late-inning dramatics lifted Marysville-Pilchuck to a place it hadn’t reached since 2004.

Holm’s walkoff double in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Levi Cartas from first base and lifted the Tomahawks to a 5-4 Wesco North victory over the Snohomish Panthers Wednesday.

With the victory Marysville-Pilchuck (13-1 in league, 15-3 overall) can do no worse than a tie for the North title, its first since 2004.

“It feels great. We’ve had some games that weren’t real tight. It’s nice to get a win in those tight games and pressure situations,” second-year Marysville-Pilchuck head coach Kurt Koshelnik said.

The win was even more special as it came against a Panther team that won or shared the past two North championships.

“It was good for the kids. They get jacked up to play Snohomish. This was a big series for us,” Koshelnik said.

Cartas opened up the seventh with a walk and Holm followed Cartas’ at-bat with the game-winning double, his second two-bagger of the game.

“We couldn’t have had a better two kids at the plate. When the ball went into the gap we knew he was coming around,” Koshelnik said about Cartas, his speedy right fielder.

Snohomish (8-6, 12-6) broke the scoreless tie in the third on a Bubba Robbins’ (2-for-4) two-run home run.

The Tomahawks countered with a blast of their own when Austin Denton’s two-run home run tied the score at 2-2.

Marysville-Pilchuck can wrap up the North title with one win in its season finale series versus Everett or a Cascade loss in either of its two final games against Monroe.
