PREP ROUNDUP: Cascade clinches Wesco North volleyball playoff spot

EVERETT — Cascade clinched a District 1 playoff spot in the Wesco North with a 26-24, 24-26, 25-20, 25-18 win over Oak Harbor Monday night at Cascade High School, and will play the Wesco South’s fourth-ranked 4A team in a play-in game on November 2.

The Bruins finished the regular season 3-5 in league, 3-10 overall, but Cascade head coach Wendy Close likes the way the Bruins have been peaking after a slow start to the season.

“I’m real pleased with the way we have been playing,” Close said. “We started out real slow, and we have slowly improved.”

Close added that the play of Danielle Love (five kills and six blocks), Rebecca Holtgeerts (nine kills), and libero Esther No jumpstarted Cascade.

Leading Oak Harbor (1-6, 3-9) was Kelsey Terrazas-Cooley’s 38 digs, Amanda Blau’s seven kills, and Janessa Ramos’ seven kills.

“We just plan on having some great practices this week,” Close said. “We need them to get ready for Monday.”

Jackson 3, Mountlake Terrace 1: At Mill Creek, Malisa Marisigan had 24 digs and Haley MacDonald added 47 assist to lead Jackson to an 18-25, 25-18, 25-11, 25-22 Wesco South league win. Christy Cain had 14 kills and six blocks and Leigh-Ann Haataja added 18 kills for the Timberwolves (7-1 league, 12-2 overall). Stephanie McGee had 27 digs, Christine Jenson had 26 assists, Raechel Pendergraft had five service aces and Liana Samuelson and Shawna Pung had eight kills apiece for Mountlake Terrace (4-4, 5-8).

Monroe 3, Everett 1: At Monroe, Megan Birch had 19 kills and Monroe (7-0, 12-1) picked up the Wesco North win with a 25-17, 24-26, 25-17, 25-17 victory over Everett (4-3, 7-6).

Kamiak 3, Shorecrest 0: At Shoreline, Kamiak earned a 25-16, 25-20, 25-20 Wesco South league win. Casey Axelson had 24 assists, Elisa Ahern had 10 kills, Lauren Schilperoort had seven kills and Nicole Swenson had six kills for Shorecrest (4-4 league, 6-7 overall). Kamiak (7-1, 11-2) stats were not reported.

Lake Stevens 3, Stanwood 1: At Lake Stevens, Brooke Larsen had 11 kills and Marchelle Bostic had 10 kills and five services aces to lead Lake Stevens to a 20-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-14 Wesco North league win. Brooke DalGleish had 18 digs for the Vikings (5-2 league, 8-5 overall). Sarah Titus had 19 digs, Kelsey Kanehen had 12 kills and Taylor Carlson had 15 assists for the Spartans (1-6, 5-8).

Shorewood 3, Mariner 0: At Everett, Shorewood’s (2-6 in league, 4-9 overall) Laura Postor had three aces and 15 digs, Carolyn Stransky had four aces and 15 assists, Dana Brindle had six kills, and Stephanie Vollbrecht had seven kills in Shorewood’s 25-16, 25-15, 25-11 victory. Mariner is now 0-8, 0-13.

Edmonds-Woodway 3, Meadowdale 0: At Edmonds, setter Leigh Fishback had 43 assists and opposite hitter Haley Scott had 13 kills to lead Edmonds-Woodway to a 25-14, 25-21, 25-20 Wesco South league win. Hannah Lauber added eight kills, three blocks and two service aces for the Warriors (6-2 league, 10-3 overall). Megan Nelson had 21 assists, Lindsey Milner had 10 kills and 10 digs and Payton Shrum added five kills and 12 digs for Meadowdale (6-2, 9-4).

Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Snohomish 1: At Snohomish, Katie Peterson had 33 digs, Mikayla LaRosa had 10 kills and Makiya Nelson had nine kills as M-P remains without a loss in the Wesco North at 7-0, 10-3 overall with the 25-16, 25-20, 23-25, 25-15 win. Snohomish (4-3, 5-7) was led by Shelby Short’s 44 assists, Maddie Fouts’ 15 kills, and Karissa Lamphere’s 22 digs.

Lynnwood 3, Glacier Peak 0: At Lynnwood, Laycee Hill had 16 assists and Jessika Barlow had 12 kills, 10 digs and four service aces to lead Lynnwood to a 25-19, 25-11, 25-15 Wesco South league win. Mokun Fajemisin added six blocks and five kills for the Royals (2-6 league, 7-6 overall). Sydney Fullerton had seven assists and three aces, Taylor Rasmussen had eight digs and Anna Darling had four assists, three digs and one ace for Glacier Peak (2-6, 3-10).

Shoreline Christian 3, Mount Vernon Christian 0: At Shoreline, Rachel Schneider scored eight service aces, Megan Bauman contributed nine kills, and Anne Marie Visser added 19 assists, clinching a spot for Shoreline Christian in the Tri-District playoffs with the 25-17, 25-20, 25-14 Northwest 1A/2B victory. Shoreline is now 9-2 in league, 11-2 overall, and Mt. Vernon Christian is 5-5, 6-6.

North Sound Christian 3, Lopez Island 1: At Lopez Island, Chantelle Meeks led North Sound with 16 kills, Maylisa Chung added 30 assists, seven aces, and six digs, and Tori Speck chipped in with 20 digs for the 25-15, 18-25, 25-18, 25-15 Northwest 1B win, keeping North Sound perfect in the league at 11-0, 12-2 overall. Lopez Island remains in second place in the league at 7-3, 7-5.
