MARYSVILLE — Cedarcrest capitalized on four Lakewood errors in a five-run sixth inning, helping the Red Wolves earn a 10-4 Cascade Conference baseball win Monday and remain undefeated in conference play this season.
The Red Wolves (10-0 league, 10-1 overall) recorded four hits in the sixth inning, but also benefited from four Lakewood (8-5, 8-5) errors. The Cougars bobbled the ball seven times overall.
“We did not do a very good job of taking care of the ball,” Lakewood head coach Larry Delaney said. “We managed to get the first out (of the sixth inning) and after a pitching change we committed four errors.”
Jansen Woelz batted 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored for Cedarcrest.
Mark Bishop, a senior shortstop and leadoff hitter for the Red Wolves, batted 2-for-4 in support of starting pitcher Gunnar Swanson.
Swanson went the distance, scattering five hits, while recording just one strikeout and walking three batters.
“We (Lakewood) had threats in the first inning, the third inning, the fifth inning, but he (Swanson) did a good job to minimize those threats and hold us to one run in those innings,” Delaney said.
Kevin Harnden, a junior second baseman for Lakewood, batted 2-for-2 with an RBI and left fielder Freddy Perez added a solo home run in the fourth inning.
