Prep Roundup: Everett beats Sultan in boys basketball

SULTAN — In its final non league game of the year, Sultan (2A) had a chance to knock off a team from 3A in Everett but let the Seagulls off the hook as they escaped the Turks home court with a 55-53 victory.

“It was a pretty well played game by both teams” Sultan coach Nate Trichler said. “We felt like we let one get away.”

There was a bit of suspense in the final seconds when, trailing by three points, Theo VandenEkhart drew a foul as Everett inbounded and hit the first of two free throws. He missed the second intentionally and the Turks came up with the rebound but their shot couldn’t find the remaining seconds ticked off the clock.

VandenEkhart was the player of the game for the Turks, scoring a game-high 24 points with 11 of those coming at the charity stripe. His only free throw miss on the night was the intentional one in the final seconds.

“He really took advantage of what was there,” Trichler said.

The Turks trailed at half but held the Seagulls scoreless for the first five minutes of the third quarter and took a lead that they would not relinquish until the final minutes of the game.

Everett’s Luke Frauenholtz had ten of his team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter all coming on putbacks.

Spencer Mckinnon hit a huge 3-pointer to finally get Everett back to even in the final minute and the Seagulls pulled away. Mckinnon finished with 13 points.

Everett resumes Wesco play against Snohomish Tuesday. Sultan gets Archbishop Murphy Friday in a rematch of a winner-to-state, loser-out game from last year that Sultan got the better of last March.
