PREP ROUNDUP: Everett wrestlers knock off a top 4A squad

EVERETT — Going into Wednesday’s Wesco North wrestling dual meet with Snohomish, Everett coach Brien Elliot knew his Seagulls would have their hands full. But Everett was prepared and came up with a 34-21 home victory over the Panthers.

“Snohomish is the 12th-ranked team in 4A (according to Washington Wrestling Report),” Elliott said. “So we knew it was going to be a close battle.”

Almost every bout was close and there were just two pins on the night. Everett’s Tyler Dutton (140 pounds) pinned Ammon Morrill in the second period and Snohomish’s Luke Perry pinned Evan Paeth with five seconds to go in the 152-pound bout.

The meet started at 215 pounds where Luke Reinhard of the Panthers sneaked past Brayden Jacobsen 10-8. The Seagulls knew that Snohomish’s strength is in the middleweights and captured the next five weight classes to build up a lead that they would never relinquish.

“They are real solid from 152 all the way to heavy,” Elliott said.

The Panthers captured three of the final four bouts but fell short in the end.

There was a scary moment in the 160-pound bout when Everett’s Connor Boyce caught his arm in the mat while falling backwards. Elliott said it might be broken. Michah Morrill won the match by injury default.

Despite the victory, the meet highlighted many areas which the Seagulls (ranked 5th in 3A) need to improve according to Elliott.

“They brought a lot of attention to where we need to improve,” he said. “They gave us some technical things that we need to work on.”
