PREP ROUNDUP: Everett wrestlers tie for 2nd place in Vashon Island Tournament

VASHON ISLAND — It took a ferry ride to Vashon Island but the Everett wrestling team came away with a strong showing Monday night, tying for second place at the Rock Island tournament. Todd Beamer took first with 169 points while Everett, Kamiak and Montsesano came in with 154.

Danny Lopez was the Seagulls’ hero of the day, wrestling at the 189-pound level despite weighing 171 to help fill out the team’s lineup. He was rewarded for his selflessness with a first-place finish. Despite trailing 4-1 early, Lopez rallied for a 5-4 triumph.

“It’s a really sportsmanlike thing he did for his teammates,” Everett coach Brien Elliott said. “He could have been selfish.”

At 215 pounds, defending state-champion Alec Bird remained undefeated on the year and took first. He dominated the final by a 6-0 score.

“He’s gotten so much better that he’s not getting challenged,” Elliott said. “The kids who saw him last year say he’s improved.”

In one of the more interesting bouts of the day Justine Palabrica placed fourth, losing to teammate Jesse Lopez at 103 pounds.

“I can’t say enough for Justine, a female beating guys,” Elliot said. “She’s a crowd pleaser. As far as strength goes, she doesn’t have it but she’s technically so strong.”

Levi Carroll (285 pounds) and Zane Crook (119 pounds) also made the finals at their respective weights but finished second.
