Shorecrest 80, Arlington 55

SHORELINE — Shorecrest boys basketball defeated Arlington in a blowout to add to what head coach Eddie George called “by far the best start” in his six-year tenure with Scots. After leading by eight at the half, Shorecrest leveraged a 17-9 third quarter to pull away.

Shorecrest senior Junior Kagarabi continued his hot start with a game-high 31 points on four 3s. Junior Brayden Fischer followed his 17-point Monday performance with 24 points on four 3s as well to help fuel the Scots’ attack.

Eagles senior star Leyton Martin had a team-high 28 points to pair with senior Billy Kooy’s 13. But the 23-point second half from the Eagles resulted from halftime adjustments to limit Martin’s playmaking ability and force other Arlington players to find shots, according to George.

The resulting win and continued streak of victories have helped dispel notions that Shorecrest’s now 11-0 start to the season has been too good to be true.

“A lot of teams counted us out tonight… ‘You guys played a couple of not as talented teams,’ is what they were saying,” said George. “We won tonight, and then we play (undefeated Edmonds-Woodway) next Tuesday, so we’re excited.”

For Arlington, the loss dropped the Eagles to 7-3 and served as a wake-up call for head coach Drew Bryson.

“Sometimes we get away from the mentality that we grew up with and that we’ve always wanted to have at Arlington, which is that ‘bring your lunchpail attitude,’” said Bryson. “You’re never going to beat a team that’s got more size and is going to beat you on those little things too… hopefully we can start playing our best ball as we get into February.”

Tulalip Heritage 84, La Conner 63

MOUNT VERNON — The Hawks advanced at the Mount Vernon Christian Hoopin’ Into the New Year Tournament with a comfortable win over La Conner Thursday afternoon. The Hawks’ aggressive defense was a theme in the win, as they recorded 16 steals to 13 team turnovers.

Tulalip Heritage was paced by junior Davien Parks (25 points) and sophomore Jaylan Gray (20 points, five steals) as the Hawks improved to 7-0. La Conner (5-4) was led by senior Tyler Cicotte’s 17 points.

Tulalip Heritage will play host Mount Vernon Christian Friday morning.
