PREP ROUNDUP: Friday Harbor beats Coupeville 3-1 in softball

FRIDAY HARBOR — A spot in the Class 1A District 1 playoffs was at stake on Friday nd the pitchers for both Friday Harbor and Coupeville were ready to fight for it. Friday Harbor came out on top with a 3-1 victory at Friday Harbor High School.

“It was literally a pitchers duel,” said Friday Harbor coach Kevin Carlton. “Both hit home runs and pitched.”

Friday Harbor pitcher Keri Goff hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning and Beth Ware hit an RBI single in the sixth and the Wolverines earned the final place in the playoff tournament.

Nicki Griffin, Coupeville’s pitcher, hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh but the Wolves were unable to close the gap.

Friday Harbor plays Nooksack Valley today at 11:30 a.m. at Janicki Fields in Sedro-Wooley and will play a second game at 2 p.m. Three of the four teams in the playoff will advance to the Tri-District. Coupeville’s season is over.

“It was a very well-played game,” said Carlton. “It’s unfortunate someone’s season had to end.”
