Prep Roundup: Kamiak avenges loss in boys tennis

SHORELINE — The first time the Kamiak and Shorewood boys tennis teams met this season Shorewood walked away with a victory.

But that was a non-conference match. Their match on Monday was for real and it was a much different result. Kamiak took a 6-1 Wesco South victory from Shorewood.

“We have really improved,” Kamiak coach Vic Alinen said.

Alinen said this year’s team is following a similar pattern to last year’s team, which lost its first two matches before reeling off 14 straight victories to win the Wesco South.

Monday the Knights were led by No. 2 singles player Andrew Lee.

Lee was going into the deciding third set having just lost the second set 6-2, but Alinen had some words of encouragement for his guy.

“I just said ‘forget about it and try to remember what you did to beat him in the first set,’” Alinen said.

Apparently it worked, Lee took the set 6-1, and the match 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.

“These guys, they really understand that you have to come ready to play because it (Wesco Conference) is so dang competitive,” Alinen said.
