MUKILTEO — When the weather doesn’t cooperate in golf, give the advantage to the home team.
In the “Purple Cup” between Kamiak, Oak Harbor, Lake Stevens and Snohomish, the boys golfers battled Harbour Pointe as well as the wind, rain and darkness Monday.
The home team — Kamiak — ran away with this one shooting 294 as a team, which was 46 strokes better than second-place Lake Stevens.
Snohomish was third with a 347 and Oak Harbor finished shooting 414.
Darkness forced the teams to play just 14 holes, which made Kamiak’s Mark Strickland’s score even more eye-popping. The Western Washington-bound senior braved the elements and shot par (56) to take medalist honors.
“Mark is going to be one of those guys all season long leading our team,” Kamiak coach Jeff Tobin said.
Strickland lead off the tournament with an eagle on the 10th hole—the tournament’s starting hole. With a strong wind at his back, Strickland stroked his driver, cutting the corner of the dogleg and hit the green with a nine-iron.
All five Kamiak golfers shot scores below the rest of the field.
The nonleague match got its name from the colors of three of the four teams. Snohomish coach Joe Mutcheson gets to bring his boys because he Tobin and Oak Harbor coach John Matzen are three of the longest tenured coaches in the league and have been friends for years.
This was Kamiak’s final tune up prior to the Dolan Invite where the Knight’s are defending champions. The tournament, held next Monday at Everett Golf and Country Club is one of two prestigous tourneys before the playoffs begin.
