PREP ROUNDUP: Lakewood’s rally falls short, Granite Falls wins 7-6

GRANITE FALLS — Granite Falls picked up a crucial Cascade Conference softball victory Wednesday.

And it happened just the way head coach Candi Reeves expected — with lots of offense and a last-inning battle.

Granite Falls led by four runs going into the seventh inning, before having to claw its way to a 7-6 win against Lakewood at Granite Falls.

“Even though we were up, it was really scary because of how good they are. There was no guarantee, even when we were up 6-2, and I told the team that,” Reeves said. “It’s crazy, the way they come back. They’re well coached and it’s always a dog fight when we play them.”

Trailing 6-2, Lakewood scored three runs in the top of the seventh, including two on a triple by Kally Behen, before the game ended.

Granite Falls took control with two runs in the first and four more in the second. Sarah Hensley, Stacey Todd and Shelby Spencer each had three hits for the Tigers. Stephanie Brennan led the Granite Falls’ attack with a double and a triple. The Tigers had 13 hits.

“We hit almost .500 tonight,” Reeves said. “It won the game for us.”

Granite Falls’ Alyssa Arndt pitched a six-hitter, improving her record to 8-4.

The Tigers are now 7-3 in the league and still in the hunt for second place.
