Prep Roundup: Last-minute goal gives Monroe girls soccer win

SNOHOMISH — Monroe won a pivotal Wesco North girls soccer match over Snohomish Saturday night, 2-1.

Monroe’s Kaylie Sowler broke a 1-1 tie in the 80th minute (Alyssa Drew assist).

Monroe had a corner kick that wasn’t cleared away from danger. The Bearcats came up with a second cross from Drew that Sowler controlled and fired a shot past Melissa Dreves, Snohomish’s goalkeeper, for the winning goal.

Snohomish (6-6-0 league and overall) took an early lead in the 18th minute when Courtney Johnson (Morgan Green) put a 35-yard shot over Bearcat goalkeeper Dani Philippart’s head.

“It was a well placed shot, she ripped it and just went right in there,” Snohomish coach April VanAssche said.

But the second half belonged to Monroe (7-3-2, 7-3-2).

Drew tied the score in the 46th minute (Sowler), which is the way the score would stay until Sowler found the back of the net in the games’ final moments.

“This was a big game for either side to win,” VanAssche said.

Snohomish had a chance, playing at home, to move up in the Wesco North standings, instead, they find itself clinging to fourth place among 4A teams in the division.

“We were disappointed, we wanted this really bad,” VanAssche said.

VanAssche summed up the difference in the game in just a few words, “putting the ball in the back of the net.”

“I think it just came down to not being able to put it in when we had to,” VanAssche added.

Archbishop Murphy 3, Eastside Catholic 0: At Bellevue, Sam Pettinger scored twice and Caroline Brawner scored an unassisted goal and added an asssist for the Wildcats in the non-conference match. Jess Ficklin also had an assist and goalkeeper Julie Connelly got the shutout for Murphy, which improved its record to 13-0 overall.
