PREP ROUNDUP: Meadowdale wins Big Dog wrestling tourney

EVERETT — Thanks to many impressive individual efforts, the Meadowdale wrestling team was able to come together and win the first-ever Big Dog Tourney at Cascade High School.

Meadowdale won the team championship, defeating O’Dea in the title bout. Tahoma and Cascade finished third and fourth respectively, followed by Eatonville, Redmond, Lakewood and Kennedy.

“They did really well,” Meadowdale head coach Brian Boardman said. “Kids were not allowing themselves to get pinned.”

The tournament had two pools of four teams. After three round-robin matches for each team produced the pool standings, the No. 1 team from pool one played the No. 1 team from pool two, and so on down the line.

“All the teams got four matches,” Todd Freeman, Cascade’s head coach said. “It’s a good chance for younger kids.”

In many tournaments, wrestlers compete in a double-elimination system, which means many kids only get to wrestle twice before they’re done for the day.

The Mavericks jumped on O’Dea early in the title match, and withstood two forfeits at 103- and 112-pounds and a pin at 119-pounds to earn the championship.

Nelson Padron (152-pounds), Jimmy Lindenstein (285), Kindu Adams (215), Kyle Jack (189), Dustin Diamond (135) and David Sanchez (130) all won all four of their matches on the day to lead Meadowdale.

Cascade, which started seven freshmen because of injuries to varsity starters, hopes to put on this tournament “every year from now on,” Freeman said.

Heavyweight Tim St. Marie went 4-0 on the day to lead the Bruins, including a triple-overtime 4-3 decision.

“It was great to get (the freshmen) experience before we start our league,” Freeman said. “If we don’t get our freshmen tough early we could be in for a long season.”
