PREP ROUNDUP: Moses Lake beats out Snohomish at MP tourney

MARYSVILLE — It came down to the final bout in the final weight class, but Moses Lake snatched the victory from Snohomish with 231 points — just 1.5 more than the second-place Panthers — at the Marysville Premier Tournament.

With both the heavyweight and team titles on the line, Moses Lake’s Kabe Fluaitt prevailed 7-1 over Snohomish’s Mike Maybin.

“Anytime you don’t get the championship it should be disappointing but our kids are not disheartened,” Snohomish coach Rob Zabel said. “Most of our kids feel good about their performance as do we as a coaching staff.”

Michah Morrill, a 160-pound senior for Snohomish, pinned his way through four bouts to the weight class crown and was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler as voted by the coaches.

“We’ve gotten to a point where Michah has to be considered one of the elite kids in the state,” Zabel said. “From what we’ve seen he’s head and shoulders above all the 160-pounders in the state.”

Host Marysville-Pilchuck also had a solid showing in the tournament, coming in at fifth place as a team. Jake Carlton made the final at 189 pounds to lead the Tomahawks.

Glacier Peak’s Josh St. Marie made the final at 119, and Stanwood’s Jarred Studley took second at 130.
