Prep Roundup: Mountlake Terrace beats Lynnwood in boys basketball

BOTHELL — Turnovers and free throws can spell the difference in any close basketball game.

This was assuredly true in Saturday night’s Wesco South matchup, as the Mountlake Terrace boys not only hit key free throws throughout the game, but capitalized on two fourth-quarter Lynnwood turnovers to beat the Royals 62-53.

The Terrace win moves both teams to 6-6, and a tie for fifth smack in the middle of the Wesco South division.

Jacob Champoux, who averages 18.4 points a game, was the primary focus for the Royals defense, “He’s their primary ballhander, and we held him to 11,” said Lynnwood assistant coach Jamie Sluys, referring to the Hawks guard.

“He (Champoux) fouled out, and we played him very well,” said Sluys. “But it came down to the end, and they made more plays down the stretch, and you gotta give them credit.”

The Hawks’ offense was led by junior wing Mitch Haldane, who scored 15 points as five Terrace players had at least eight.

6-10 center Simi Fajemisin poured in 20 points to lead the Royals with junior guard Anthony Edwards chipping in with 17.

“We knew it was going to be a physical game,” said Sluys of their crosstown rivals. “We lost by 18 the first time around, but we definitely made a few too many errors, and they capitalized on them.
