SNOHOMISH — Snohomish girls tennis coach Dick Jansen didn’t know what to expect from his young Panthers heading into the season.
So far, so good.
The Panthers, who graduated 12 of their top 14 players from a year ago, racked up their third straight victory to open the season. This one was a convincing 6-1 handling of Lake Stevens (2-2) Monday.
“Our younger players played really solid against a really solid Lake Stevens team,” Jansen said.
The best match of the day came in the No. 1 doubles when Julie Winston and Brielle Nicholas rallied to take down the Eagles’ Mackenzie Grafe and Brooke Larsen after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker. Winston and Nicholas prevailed 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-1.
“(Before the season) I’m thinking it’s going to be kind of a rebuilding year but the girls really surprised me,” Jansen said.
The true test of the Panthers’ strength will come Wednesday when they host Stanwood, which has also yet to lose in three tries.
