Prep Roundup: Shorewood defeats Lake Stevens 9-8 in a loser-out district baseball game

EVERETT — In a back-and-forth playoff classic, Shorewood was able to pull out a 9-8 victory in eight innings at the 4A District 1 loser-out playoff game.

Shorewood advances to play the loser of today’s game between Mountlake Terrace and Marysville-Pilchuck. Lake Stevens finishes its season 19-3.

Connor McKeever led the Thunderbirds (14-9 overall) batting 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Trevor Matsui (2-for-3) and Robbie Rusch (3-for-4) added doubles for Shorewood.

Matt Sweeney hit a solo home run for Lake Stevens, which tied the score with three runs in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a two-run double by Brandon Fiske and a double by Dylan Lavelle. The Vikings threatened with runners on 2nd and 3rd base in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn’t match the three runs Shorewood put up in the top of the inning.

Monroe 8, Stanwood 7 (8 inn.): At Everett, after Stanwood scored on a Mike McCune sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning, Tyler Ihrig hit a walk-off single in the bottom half to cap a two-run inning as Monroe rallied to win the 4A District 1 tournament game. The Bearcats move on to play the winner of today’s Jackson-Kamiak game. Josh Orcutt batted 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and two RBI to lead Stanwood.

Boys soccer

Kamiak 1, Arlington 0: At Mukilteo, Tyler Hawkinson scored in the 33rd minute (Kyle Watts assist) to break a scoreless tie and lead Kamiak into the quarterfinals of the 4A District 1 playoffs. The Knights’ Caleb Smith earned the shutout as goalie.

Snohomish 3, Monroe 2: At Snohomish, Reilly Cross scored a hat trick-all in the last seven minutes of the game-to lead Snohomish to the win in the loser-out game of the 4A District 1 tournament. Carson Pingrey assisted on the first two goals (73rd and 76th minutes) and Troy McCarty helped out on the final goal. Mitchell Balk (Jack Fortune assist) and Edmond Fisher (Chris Sowler) accounted for Monroe’s goals. Collin Shelton earned the victory in goal for Snohomish (11-5-1 overall) and Jose Perez was the keeper for the Bearcats (9-7-2).

Arlington 4, Monroe 3 (8 inn.): At Arlington, Kalie Basher had two RBI, including the game-winning one on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Arlington over Monroe in the Wesco North game. Lynsey Amundson batted 3-for-3 with a double for the Eagles.

Cedarcrest 8, Coupeville 5: At Duvall, A four-run fourth inning catapulted Cedarcrest past Coupeville, keeping the Wolves winless in the Cascade Conference. Red Wolves starter Dani Kissinger got herself into some trouble in the third inning, allowing Coupeville to put four runs across but she settled down after that.

Taylor Turner led Cedarcrest with a 3-for-3 night which included two runs and an RBI. Leading the way for the Wolves in the losing cause was Taylor Lawson as she batted 2-for-4.

Mountlake Terrace 5, Edmonds-Woodway 3: At Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace rode a 3-for-4 performance from Rene Bos in defeating Edmonds-Woodway. Bos hammered two doubles and a home run while scoring two runs against Woodway starter Katelynn Lafferty. For the Hawks, Kelsi Seidlitz pitched all seven innings allowing three runs on four hits and striking out nine.

Jackson 10, Shorewood 8: At Mill Creek, after Shorewood jumped ahead 6-0, Jackson mounted an impressive comback with home runs by Lindsay Robison, Matti Tetzloff and Erin Feeney as the Timberwolves came storming back in the Wesco South game. Tetzloff’s (2-for-3) two-run home run tied the game at 6-6 and Feeney’s two-run shot capped a six-run sixth inning for Jackson. Madison Hollenbeck (2-for-3) hit a three run home run and finished with four RBI and Kendra Holley also went deep for the Thunderbirds.

Goodward also batted 3-for-4 with three runs scored for the Royals. Kelsey Parker led Lynnwood offensively batting 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBI and two runs scored.

Meadowdale 11, Kamiak 5: At Lynnwood, Kylee Studioso had a 3-for-4 night from the plate including a two-run home run and pitched a complete game to lead her Mavericks past Kamiak on Monday.

The Knights struck first, opening up with four runs in the first inning off of Studioso, but the right-hander largely settled down after that, allowing just one more run (in the second inning) while striking out six Kamiak hitters.

Her performance on the mound, allowed her team to mount a comeback. The Mavericks answered with two runs of their own in the first to cut the Knights’ lead to 4-2 and then followed with five more in the second to take a 7-5 lead. That coupled with her own two-run homer in the third inning would be all the help Studioso would need on the night.

With the win, Meadowdale ties Kamiak sixth place in the Wesco South.

Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Oak Harbor 0: At Oak Harbor, Jen Rosie pitched her second no-hitter of the season, leading the Tomahawks past Oak Harbor on Monday evening. Rosie struck out 11 Wildcats while walking two. Megan Rollings led Marysville with a 2-for-4 night.

Alex Kubeska batted 3-for-3 with three RBI and a triple to help South Whidbey. Manuel helped herself out, adding two RBIs on offense for the Wildcats.
