PREP ROUNDUP: Six straight bout streak lifts Jackson wrestling team

BOTHELL — The Jackson wrestling team started strong with six consecutive victories and held on down the stretch, defeating Lynnwood 44-29 in a Wesco South wrestling meet Tuesday.

Jackson improved its mark to 2-1 in the Wesco South, 2-1 overall, with Lynnwood falling to 1-2, 3-4.

After five straight Jackson wins, Lynnwood’s 189-pound Jesus Calderon held the lead 7-6 late into the third period, but the Timberwolves’ Sam Herring hit a reversal with just under 20 seconds remaining to take an 8-7 lead. Herring held on, with Calderon trying an escape to no avail.

“Herring just hit it, he did what he had to do late in the third,” Lynnwood assistant coach Nate Cogdill said. “They outwrestled us overall, they did a real nice job.”

Lynnwood then got back-to-back pins, with 285-pound heavyweight Chris Kossik pinning Hector Morrell at the 2:29 mark. Cogdill said that Kossik is a developing wrestler, and that the win is vital to the construction of Kossik’s skills.

The Royals’ Zach Calkins bumped up from 112 to 119 and had no problems, holding the lead for most of the match in a high scoring 20-11 victory over Jordan Stevens.

Jackson won three bouts by forfeit, including the second to last bout of the evening.
