PREP ROUNDUP: Tulalip remains alive in 2B Tri-district playoffs

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Tulalip Heritage kept its state tournament hopes alive Saturday by squeaking out a 53-49 victory over Grace Academy in the 1B Tri-district playoffs at Mountlake Terrace H.S.

Grace Academy was behind by 11 points in the middle of the third quarter, but came back to make a game of it. With one minute to go in the game, Tulalip led by just one at 50-49.

“We hit some free throws at the end,” Tulalip head coach Tina Brown said.

Rilla Jones, who had 17 points, made three of four free throws in the final period and Shawnee Enick made four of six.

“Rilla just played outstanding,” Brown said.

Tulalip will play the loser of the Highland Christian vs. North Sound Christian semifinal in another loser-out game Friday night Mountlake Terrace. The winner of that game plays for the tournament’s third seed to state.

2A District 1 meet: At Anacortes, Archbishop Murphy had two swimmers post state meet qualifying times during Saturday’s finals at Fidalgo Pool. Philip Walczak was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5 minutes, 13.09 seconds. Arden Hunter advanced with times of 2:14.97 in the 200 individual medley and 1:02.02 in the 100 backstroke.

Archbishop Murphy’s Cameron Wade won the 135-pound championship by pinning Camden Nix of Blaine in 2 minutes, 30 seconds to help the Wildcats finish in eighth place. Sultan (sixth place) had Garret Varnell place second at 112 pounds and also placed Mikey Varnell second at 130 pounds. Zach Jones of Granite Falls (ninth place) finished second at 215 pounds and JD Gorman of Cedarcrest (seventh place) finished second at 125 pounds. Andrew McKibben of Granite Falls also placed second at 285 pounds.

2B/1B Region I meet: At Elma, Darrington advanced seven wrestlers to state and will take two alternates after finishing second to Tacoma Baptist, the best regional team finish in school history according to coach Chad Monteith. “I feel really good,” Montheith said. “Last week we were third at district. This week we knocked off last week’s No. 1 (Concrete) and took second so I’m really happy.” Johnny Loughnan (119 pounds) and Rich Groh (160) won region championships for Darrington. Demitri Robinson of Tulalip Heritage collected a title at 125 pounds.

Region I meet: At Renton, Casey Mather of Stanwood needed almost all of the six minutes allotted to win a regional championship at 119 pounds, pinning Jasmine Hernandez of Burlington-Edison in 5 minutes, 56 seconds. Mather advanced to next weekend’s Mat Class state meet as a No. 1 seed. Also winning regional titles and top seeds were Lakewood teammates Keely Caldwell (130 pounds) and Christina Ordonez (152). Lakewood finished fourth in the team competition followed by Stanwood in fifth. Sedro-Woolley won the regional championship.
