PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP: Glacier Peak notches victory in shootout

SNOHOMISH — Practice makes perfect.

Glacier Peak dropped its first shootout of the season to Shorewood, but Grizzlies’ coach Melinda Torre joked that maybe her team is getting better at them with practice.

Buoyed by a Nicole Giovine save on the Mavericks first shootout attempt, Glacier Peak earned a 3-2 Wesco South victory Tuesday.

Meadowdale’s Brittany Evarts attempted the first shot and put the ball toward the low, left corner of the goal, but Giovine guessed right, making the save.

“That just brings up the morale of the team when the first thing that happens is the goalkeeper makes a save and the kids get pumped up,” Torre said.

Meadowdale (3-1-0 league, 7-3-1 overall) certainly made things difficult on Glacier Peak, scoring in the first minute when Julia Fjortoft (Kaeli Eberth assist) found the back of the net.

“They put us on our heels right away,” Torre said.

Sarah Desautels (Brooke Gilbert assist) scored in the 16th minute and Miranda Granger (Gilbert) put the Grizzlies ahead in the 44th minute.

That lead would be short lived as Fjortoft (Eberth) again scored in the 53rd minute to tie the score 2-2.

“Julia typically gets her goals, she’s a great forward and she has a nose for the goal,” Torre said.

Despite earning the victory in the shootout, Torre said Meadowdale did a good job of getting Glacier Peak (3-1-0, 8-2-1) out of its rhythm, starting with the goal in the first minute.

“To be able to pull a win out of not having your best outing is always good,” Torre said.

Julia Grossenbacher had seven saves in goal for the Mavericks.
