SNOHOMISH — Sometimes the team that can make the best adjustments is the team that gets the win. That seemed to be the case for the Snohomish Panthers, who defeated the Monroe Bearcats 3-1 in the Wesco North season opener for both teams.
In the first half, Snohomish’s acting head coach Matt Raney said that the team did a good job of getting behind the defense and creating opportunities at the goal, but couldn’t take advantage of the opportunities, which led to a scoreless game early.
After a scoreless 38 minutes, Brendon Gundry (Carson Pingrey assist) got Snohomish on the board first, but Monroe’s Andrew Barrett (Jorge Avila) tied the score at 1-1 with a goal in the 40th minute.
Both coaches seemed to think that the intensity of the game was at a high level on both sides.
“The speed and pace of the game was a good thing for the first game of the year,” Monroe head coach Ryan Schaeffer said.
Schaeffer also credited Snohomish with being able to take advantage of its opportunities.
Helping the Panthers to take advantage were a few halftime adjustments that led to their two second-half goals.
“We made some very specific adjustments with how we were using the flanks,” Raney said. “Those halftime adjustments seemed to fit well with the formation Monroe was using,”
Zach Crutchfield (Spencer Helfrich) was the first to take advantage for the Panthers in the 60th minute and Reece Donnolly (Gundry) got into the act in the 70th minute as well.
Crutchfield and Helfrich are two of the captains on Snohomish and Raney has been impressed with what he has seen so far.
“I’m very excited about the leadership on this team,” Raney said. “The captains are doing a very good job of managing because there are some youngsters out there.”
Cody Melander was the goalkeeper for Snohomish (1-0 league and overall). Jose Perez was in goal for Monroe (0-1).
Snohomish head coach Dan Pingrey is on a coaching trip to Spain and will miss his team’s first four games.
