MUKILTEO — Kamiak had plenty of reasons to get up for Wednesday night’s soccer game with Mariner that ended the regular season. The Knights needed every bit of motivation to hold off Mariner in the 2-1 shootout victory in front of the home fans on senior night.
“It was a big match,” Kamiak coach Garfield Scott said. “They were pretty emotional.”
Not only was the Mukilteo Cup on the line, but the winner secured a berth into the 4A District 1 playoffs, while the loser was relegated to the play-in game against Monroe.
Fittingly the game used up all the time on the clock and went to penalty kicks.
After two turns shooting penalties Kamiak had a 2-0 advantage thanks to a Caleb Smith save and a Mariner attempt that was wide. But Martin Banuelos stepped up in goal for the Marauders and saved two straight to set up a dramatic final Mariner attempt. Smith managed the save and the Knights celebrated a 4-3 shootout advantage.
“Caleb is and experienced keeper,” Scott said. “I had confidence that he would do a good job and he stepped up.”
