PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP: Two early goals boost Snohomish

SNOHOMISH — With an offensive fury in the first twenty minutes, the Snohomish girls soccer team (4-3 league and overall) jumped on Marysville-Pilchuck (4-2-1, 4-2-1) to take a 2-0 lead and then held on for a 2-1 Wesco North victory Tuesday.

“We wanted to focus on getting a lot of pressure for the first 20 minutes,” Snohomish coach April Van Assche said.

That is exactly what the Panther’s did. Junior midfielder Shelby Beeman got into the act early drilling one over the keeper’s head and off the far post from 35 yards out (third minute). Sophomore forward Annie Hund used a pass from freshman forward Morgan Green, who had both Panther assists, to score what turned out to be the winning goal in the 10th minute.

The Tomahawks got their only score from Lauren Nolte with Kiely Cordon on the assist (75th minute).

Ashley Holten held down the nets for the Panthers and Mandy Schoonover started in goal for M-P, whose second-half keeper was not reported.

Everett 1, Monroe 0: At Monroe, Monroe put a scare into undefeated Everett, playing at tight game on its home turf only to surrender an unassisted goal just before the end of the first half of the Wesco North contest. Sophomore forward Makaela Nellams converted a rebound off the post for the Everett (7-0 league and overall) score in the 39th minute. Junior Dani Philippart was one shot from a shutout in goal for the Bearcats. Freshman Katie Johnson was perfect in front of the net for Everett. Monroe’s (3-2-2, 3-2-2) best scoring chance came around the 52nd minute when a shot came off the post.

Cascade 1, Oak Harbor 0: At Everett, Sarah Jenkins’ direct free kick from 18 yards out sailed past Oak Harbor goalie Maggie Gorman and into net at the far post in 32nd minute, and Cascade goalie Rachel Leupold didn’t allow a goal in Cascade’s first win of the season, making the Bruins 1-5-2 in league and overall. Oak Harbor is now 0-7, 0-7.

Stanwood 1, Lake Stevens 1: At Lake Stevens, Kinslee Isaman (Sandra Osborn assist) scored in the 19th minute of the Wesco North game for Lake Stevens, but Stanwood’s Riley Henderson tied the score in the 30th. Sierra Hobday played goalkeeper for Lake Stevens (5-1-1 league and overall), as did Haley Haugstad for Stanwood (2-3-2, 2-3-2).

Shorewood 4, Lynnwood 0: At Shoreline, Katy Penrod hit a couple headers off the post, but connected on one from 6 yards out on Anastaja Norins’ pass to give Shorewood a 3-0 lead, and the eventual non-league win. Lisa Echert scored first for the Thunderbirds (assist Sarah Clements), Norins added a goal (Emily Jensen assist) and Jennifer Franklin scored unassisted. Shorewood’s (3-3-1 overall) goalie Madison Hollenbeck earned the shutout over Lynnwood (1-6-0).

Shorecrest 3, Mountlake Terrace 0: At Edmonds, Alexis Ramos scored twice, assisted once by Michelle Rood) and Rachel Schrote added an unassisted goal for Shorecrest (3-2-2 overall) in the non-league win. Kayla Obrycki and Chelsey Doyle were in goal for the Scots. Takara Mitsui was in goal for Terrace (0-6-1).

Kamiak 9, Mariner 0: At Mukilteo, Cassidy Seckman started the scoring with a goal on a header off Lauren Luke’s cross, and Seckman scored three more times to pace Kamiak in the non-conference win. Hailey Tharp scored (Luke assist), Luke added a goal (assist Shelby Knowles), Knowles scored (Kayla Clement assist), Anna Larmore scored unassisted and Cara Munoz capped off the Knights’ scoring unassisted. Tana Foster and Emma Makela shared the shutout in goal. Kamiak is now 4-1-2 overall, Mariner 0-7.

Jackson 3, Meadowdale 1: At Lynnwood, it was the Megan Bolmes and Cara Wegner show for undefeated Jackson. Bolmes, the senior midfielder, and Wegner, the sophomore forward, accounted for all three Jackson goals. Bolmes had two, the first in the 18th minute and the second in the 60th (assist Wegner). Wegner got on the board in the 42nd minute. Meadowdale’s Macee Gavett narrowed the Jackson (6-0-1) advantage with 10 minutes to play, but that was all the damage against the Jackson goalkeeping duo of Kayla Beer and KC Wilson. Sophomore Julia Grossenbacher was in goal for the Mavericks (3-1-1).

Cedarcrest 3, Coupeville 0: At Coupeville, Clare O’Donnell (assist Maggie Pleis) scored in the 12th minute to give Cedarcrest (4-2 league, 5-2-1 overall) the only goal it would need in the Cascade Conference game. Ashton Griffen added two unassisted goals for the Red Wolves. Kori Butterfield and Jordan Cleman shared goalkeeping duties for Cedarcrest. Megan Smith was i n goal in the first half for Coupeville (1-5, 3-5). Its second-half keeper was not reported.

Lakewood 9, Sultan 0: At Sultan, Lakewood had had eight different goal scorers, including goalkeeper Miranda Head who came out of goal in the second half. Morgan Rettig had two goals, while Erin Dierickx, Alisha Stott, Abby Burke, Kelsey Anderson, Maddie Chamberlin, Kennady Bonnallie and Head all found the back of the net once. Assists came from Yesenia Talamantes (two), Ilyssa Haunreiter, Dierickx, Stott, Burke and Anderson each had one assist. Head was relieved in goal by Emily Schneider and Kara Stensen went the distance in the net for the Turks. Lakewood improved to 5-1 in league, 7-1 overall while Sultan dropped to 0-6, 0-7.

Archbishop Murphy 8, South Whidbey 0: At Langley, Caroline Brawner scored back-to-back goals two minutes apart (assists Lindsey Bos, Kelly Gould), Sam Pettinger scored two goals and had two assists and Bos totaled three assists and two goals to lead Archbishop Murphy (6-0 in league, 7-0 overall) to the Cascade Conference win. Steph Conard, Jess Ficklin and Shelby Koch each had goals for Murphy. Goalkeeper Alexa Hughes earned the shutout for the Wildcats. South Whidbey is now 1-5, 2-5.

King’s 3, Granite Falls 1: At Shoreline, King’s Hillary Zevenbergen had two goals, one unassisted and the other assisted by MacKenzie Graham. and Olivia Baker added a third goal for King’s. Maddy McDevitt played goalkeeper for King’s (5-1 league, 6-1 overall). Granite Falls’ (2-4, 4-4) goalscorer and goalkeeper were not reported.

Boys soccer

Providence Classical Christian 4, Mount Vernon Christian 1: At Lynnwood, Ryan Morris scored for Providence Classical Christian in the 58th and 77th minutes (Beau Butaud assist). Aaron Johnson (Andrew Moisant) found the net in the 12th minute and Caled Moisant (A. Moisant) scored in the 29th minute for PCC. The Mount Vernon Christian (MVC) goalscorer was not reported. Luke Morris was in goal for PCC (2-2 overall). Caleb Brown played goalkeeper for MVC (3-3).

Lopez Island 3, Grace Academy 2: At Lopez Island, Williams Carson, Nia Bartolucci and Charlie O’Neil scored goals for Lopez Island. Enrique Kramer scored both goals for Grace Academy. Garrett Weinberg played goalkeeper for Grace Academy (0-1 league, 0-6 overall), as did Arlen Coiley for Lopez Island (1-0 league, 2-2 overall).
