EVERETT — Two goalies, one junior and one freshman, put on a clinic Thursday night during the Wesco North girls soccer game between Everett and Marysville-Pilchuck.
In the end, it was the freshman who prevailed.
Led by the strong play of goalkeeper Katie Johnson and a goal by Annie Sittauer, the Seagulls defeated the Tomahawks 1-0.
“The goalkeeper play on both ends was really good,” Everett head coach Kosta Pitharoulis said. “It turned out exactly how I expected it … a tough game for both teams.”
Pitharoulis praised his first-year keeper’s effort in the first shutout of her high school career.
“I hope there are many more to come,” Pitharoulis said.
The lone score of the game came in the 32nd minute, when Sittauer received a pass from Kylie Beeson and put it in the goal to put Everett (3-0 in league and overall) up.
“We had some other dangerous moments, but didn’t get it in there,” Pitharoulis said.
He then went on to complement the Tomahawks’ (3-1) goalkeeper, Lauren Schoonover.
“Schoonover did an excellent job in goal for Marysville,” Pitharoulis said. “We did get some shots off but Lauren’s a quality goalie. She made some good diving saves early and late.”
Becca Lentz, an M-P defender, also contributed an impressive defensive effort that disrupted the Seagulls’ attack on more than one occasion.
“She did an outstanding job (on defense),” Pitharoulis said. “She definitely made it difficult.”
“I look forward to playing them again,” Pitharoulis continued. “It’s good to have a nice tight game and see what Everett can do. …The overall effort of both teams for 80 minutes was impressive. They didn’t want to leave anything on the field, and they played their hearts out.
“It was a good game. Really entertaining.”
