PREP SOCCER/TENNIS ROUNDUP: Archbishop Murphy defenders shut down Bellingham

MT. VERNON — Archbishop Murphy goalie Doug Ehlebracht posted his 11th shutout as the Wildcats (13-4 overall) dropped Bellingham 2-0 in a winner-to-state 2A District 1 boys soccer semifinal game Tuesday at Mt. Vernon H.S.

Ehlebracht was supported by the defense of Sean Ryan, Alex Kramer, Aiden Huggins, Jacob Clark and Cobi Weyers, said Murphy coach Eddie Fernandez. They combined to hold scoreless a Bellingham team which had approximately 70 goals on the season.

Matt Fryer (Alexis Magana assist) notched Murphy’s first goal in the 18th minute. Magana back heeled the ball in the top of the box and Fryer pounced on it and put it away, Fernandez said.

Stephen Briede (Erik Schmidt assist) scored an insurance goal in the 75th minute. Fernandez said Murphy was defending against Bellingham pressure when Schmidt put a long ball forward to Briede, who scored from 18 yards out.

Murphy lost 2-1 to Bellingham in a non-conference game earlier this season.

“It was good to come back on them,” Fernandez said.

Murphy will be making its second straight appearance in the district title game, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Vernon. The Wildcats lost to Sehome in the final last year.

Snohomish 2, Edmonds-Woodway 0: At Edmonds, Snohomish scored two goals in the first half and Cody Melander earned the shutout in goal for the Panthers (12-5-1 overall) in the loser-out 4A District 1 playoff game. Mackenzie Nutt scored unassisted in the 23rd minute and Daryn English added the second goal unassisted in the 38th minute. E-W (10-7-1) had Erik Whitney in goal.

Kamiak 1, Jackson 0: At Everett, Zach Faller broke a scoreless tie in the 54th minute to send the Knights into the semifinals of the 4A District 1 playoffs. Kamiak keeper Caleb Smith earned the shutout.

Mount Vernon 4, Glacier Peak 0: At Shoreline, Mount Vernon shut out the Grizzlies to move into the 3A District 1 championship game versus Shorecrest. Eric Estrada scored just before halftime to set the tone for Mt. Vernon’s strong second half. Nate Barber would score two goals in the 55th and 60th minutes and Rene Caro added another to complete the scoring. Glacier Peak will take on Everett in a loser out game on Thursday.

Shorecrest 8, Everett 1: At Shoreline, Michael Harris had a hat trick, Glenn Paden had two goals and three assists and Shorecrest trailed for the first time all season before coming back to win the 3A District 1 semifinal. Everett’s David Gebert scored on a free kick in the third minute and the Seagulls held off Shorecrest until the 36th minute. Eric Baker and Sam Schober were in goal for Shorecrest. Hiei Rose, Eli Blauser, Maoulay Adjorlolo each scored goals for the Scots. Shorecrest will play Mt. Vernon in the district championship game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Shoreline Stadium.
