PREP SOCCER/TENNIS ROUNDUP: Marysville-Pilchuck overtakes Snohomish in Wesco North soccer standings

MARYSVILLE — With its back against the wall and nearly three-quarters of the team at less than 100 percent, Marysville-Pilchuck held on for a 3-2 Wesco North victory over Snohomish on Tuesday night.

With the win, M-P improved to 7-7-1 in league and overall with 22 points and kept Snohomish (7-8-0, 7-8-0, 21 points) from clinching a 4A District 1 playoff berth.

“They (M-P) basically left it on the line,” since nearly three-quarters of the Tomahawks entered the contest either sick or injured, M-P head coach Gary Riozzi said. “You can’t ask any more from your players.”

In the 35th minute, Melissa Kirk received a pass from Danielle Norton, spun around and kicked a straight-on shot into the goal for an early 1-0 M-P lead. Norton then scored from 18 yards out at the top of the box, receiving a pass from Kiely Cordon in the 58th minute for a 2-0 lead.

Snohomish answered in the 63rd minute with Courtney Johnson scoring unassisted. Three minutes later, M-P added to its lead when Rachel Hamelin placed a corner kick in front of the goal, and in bang-bang fashion, Becca Lentz headed it in, skidding the ball on the ground past Snohomish goalkeeper Melissa Dreves.

In the 78th minute, Shillia Crosby was assisted by Johnson, but Tomahawks freshman goalie Melissa Shuetze shut the door the rest of the way.

“It was senior night, we had a little extra adrenaline … I wasn’t getting really nervous, it was more of just staying composed and not panicking,” Riozzi said. “Snohomish played tough, I just think we had more will.”

M-P is guaranteed no worse than a play-in game to district.

“We just gotta keep going, regardless, we have to stay healthy, we are going through adversity right now,” said Riozzi.
