PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: South Whidbey mounts 7th-inning comeback

LANGLEY — It took seven innings, but South Whidbey’s softball team finally broke through against Cedarcrest in a 5-4 Cascade Conference win Friday at South Whidbey High School.

Allison Wood, a senior first baseman, laced a two-out, two-run double to the gap in left-center field in the bottom of the seventh that erased a 4-2 deficit. Following a walk, senior second baseman Melanie Murphy connected on a walk-off single up the middle, scoring Wood and giving South Whidbey its first victory in what had been a long week for the Falcons (4-4 league, 4-5 overall).

“We just couldn’t generate anything all game,” South Whidbey head coach Don Wood said, adding that the Falcons had lost twice earlier in the week by close margins. “… Finally, our girls started hitting them up the middle and finding the gaps (in the seventh inning).”

Katy Piehler, a junior who earned the win for South Whidbey, hit an RBI single up the middle with one out in the seventh to draw the Falcons to a 4-2 deficit before Wood’s and Murphy’s key hits.

“It was a great come-from-behind win,” Wood said. “The girls showed just a lot of tenacity to stay in the game and never give up.”
